Little Lamb Finds Christmas (A Book Review)

Cathy Gilmore’s newly released children’s book Little Lamb Finds Christmas touches the heart and helps children (and adults) focus on the deepest meaning of Christmas.

Following Lemi, the “little lamb,” through his troubles, the reader witnesses moments of physical challenges, loneliness, fear, and confusion. However, the story beautifully counters these troubles with strength, companionship, faith, and miracles. As Gilmore has said, “Lemi is an ‘everylamb’ like all of us.” We struggle again and again in countless ways, but through it all Jesus is our “forever Shepherd,” and we “belong to a King”!

Illustrator Kim Wilson delivers a visual feast with her display of realistic images, texture, and color.  Her artwork mirrors the unique mixture of simplicity and depth of Faith. My favorite image is when Lemi bleats a “soft hello to the little King”…the hay beneath Jesus is dry, scratchy, and harsh, but He is comfortable in his soft swaddling cloths and so close to Lemi’s soft, warm fleece.

Little Lamb Finds Christmas is available from, Barnes and, and Catholic bookstores.

Check Cathy Gilmore’s website for a calendar of events and how to get free downloads of songs and activities.

The Tree of Healing

The Tree of Healing front coverThe Tree of Healing by Catholic author and illustrator Diana González Tabbaa features 33 poems, prose, and 33 original works of art that breathe forth spiritual mystery and awe.

“Rose spends much of her time dwelling on her troubles. She lives in a state of worry and loneliness as her mother has been harsh and distant since the death of her father when she was an infant. One golden summer, as she leaves her childhood years, her grandmother and a heaven-sent friend teach her to bring everything in her life to God in prayer and to bring His Life into her own. She comes to know and trust Him deeply, especially when she discovers a carving made by her father in a great tree that forms the crucifix of a Rosary Garden. Hidden in its depths and unfolding in layers of mystery and beauty, signs of God’s Love are continuously revealed to her. A Mary’s Garden that she plants reflects her own growth in a living faith that brings a garden of souls with her to God, including her mother.

Suitable for all ages, this timeless story of forgiveness and hope shows how suffering is transformed through union with Christ. Enriched with spiritual art, poetry, and quotes from Scripture, The Tree of Healing tells of the healing of one young girl and of all wounded humanity by the Sacrifice of Jesus on a new Tree of Life.”

Book Review of a Spiritual Memoir by Colleen Carroll Campbell

For those of us who are sister-less, let’s thank God for our moms, girlfriends, and, sometimes when they get older and can fill the role more fully, even our daughters when we require a little (or a lot of) sisterhood in our lives. But what about calling upon our sisters, the saints?

In My Sisters the Saints: A Spiritual Memoir, Colleen Carroll Campbell shows how her relationships with the female saints provide companionship, compassion, direction, and peace.

In our current culture where the saints are deeply misunderstood, ignored, and sometimes worse…in this same world where true God-given femininity is deeply misunderstood and perverted, then pedestaled and sold to the Screen shot 2014-01-09 at 11.40.46 AMmasses as the one and only real feminism, we desperately need honest, humble voices like Campbell’s to speak the Truth. In sharing her own personal struggles and her spiritual and intellectual encounters with the saints, we witness and understand the beauty and strength of God’s hand in our lives.

Not your typical memoir, not your typical book about saints. Campbell’s book is for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. And, ladies, you will be inspired!
